My review
House M.D
(2004 – on going)

House M.D (also known simply as House) is a popular TV show, created by David Shore, about a controversial yet genius doctor and his team of doctors as they come across peculiar medical cases that aren’t easily diagnosed. Each episode centres on a patient and the team’s struggle to find what illness ails him or her, and, if they can, cure it.

British actor Hugh Laurie stars as the irreverent Dr. Gregory House, excellent diagnostician, who has limp due to an accident, is Vicodin addicted and whose motto is “everybody lies”. His team consists of Dr. Foreman (Omar Epps), Dr. Cameron (Jennifer Morrison) and Dr. Chase (Jesse Spencer), each specialized in different areas of medicine practice. Along with Dr. Wilson (Robert Sean Leonard), House’s best friend, and Dr. Cuddy (Lisa Edelstein), House’s boss, they give life to this fantastic medical show that has captivated so many fans.

Laurie’s performance really stands above all rest. Being British, Laurie has to fake American accent throughout the show (upon the casting, the director believed he was American) and he does it surprisingly well. House’s clever one-liners and witty comebacks couldn’t be better played and his whole unique behaviour is very well portrayed. The supporting cast, each with very distinctive personalities and different relationships with House, are too well played, their views and opinions clashing with House’s unique thinking.

Shore’s writing is the “soul” of this show. Moral or politically incorrect speeches stay in your mind as you hear them, making you think that maybe whatever nonsense you’ve just heard actually makes sense in society nowadays. Mixing this with humorous talk and loads of medical terms that without subtitles you couldn’t really understand, you have an Emmy award winner TV show script.

Overall, a must-see. If you like medical shows, then you won’t be disappointed with this. Even if you don’t like this kind of shows, it’s worth seeing. If not just to get a laugh at Dr. House’s insults. Definitely one of the best TV shows created recently.

I'm "On the road"
"On the road" can have a lot of meanings, for instance, to travel. Sometimes people wish they could leave everything behind and take on an adventure. We need to break with routine, to create new expectations and most of all, to follow our hearts.
However, we can also be "On the road" if we are trying to run away from a bad choice. Our life doesn't always run as we predict. We never know what's inside a box until we've opened it!

Technology Task 2. - On the road

On the road of life

The 1st idea I have when I read “on the road” is our own life…the road of life! I think there is, at least, one similarity between a road and a life: both can be unpredictable; both can be long or short…

About the image I've chosen, it represents, for me, the moments which I live my life looking back…looking at the Past…and we do that frequently! We build our Present and our Future looking at the Past. In one hand, that is “good” because we learn with the mistakes we do/did, but on the other hand it isn’t because if we’re always looking back, we’re living the Past, not the Present. The same happens with the Future: many times, we live thinking about what we’ll do tomorrow/next week/month/year… Sometimes we plan our entire lives! I think we should be ambitious and have projects for the Future but we shouldn’t do that in excess!

I think the photo represents a little bit about our “road” looking back!

On the way of the Future
with the marks of the Past
and the Present?
Ups! It seems that we leave it for last!

So, don’t let “The Present” become “The Past”…just LIVE IT, NOW!

P.S.:
I found another image that I would like to post because I like it very much and I think it also represents “on the road of life”: the ways we have to choose, the choices we have to make…and sometimes we feel lost and we think: “Oh! Where do I go now?”. Here it is:

Photo Essay

This photo wasn't taken by me, but by a close friend of mine. This is just outside her father's home village, Águas de Moura.

And now you say: "It's another photo of a road!". Yes, but it's different.

This road doesn't go on forever, it takes a turn right after it starts. Like our life, which is made of turns and twists. Sometimes we even go back, not in time since it's not possible, but our opinions, our decisions, our way of being goes back sometimes. For the better or for the worse.

The sun shines on the beginning of this road, but it won't always shine. At some points it won't shine so brightly or it won't shine at all. But don't give up Road! You are surrounded by the most beautiful nature, the most beautiful flowers and trees, and even by wonderful people who, like you, are on the road of their lives and are surrounded by the ones they love.

The future is unpredictable. How many twists and turns you'll make are unpredictable. The end is unpredictable.

Just like this road.

But never give up walking down it.

On the road - photo essay

A river that never stops, always running, just like our life. I love to see the river going on its way, sometimes faster and sometimes slower, but it never stops. Watching it here always makes me want to go with it without knowing the way I will take, just going on, without no special destiny.

It's like a way to run away from problems and from everything.

It's like being on the road, a road to nowhere, a road to a special place where there is only happiness and friendship.

The boat that is stopped reminds me the times someone doesn't go on with life and their lives are lost and pass by their sides… That's the way I feel sometimes and that's why I like this photo. And because it was taken by me and some friends at Benavente for a school work…

Photo Essay
OUR FIRST ROAD

This is certainly the first journey of our lives…We follow a road we don’t know without seeing or thinking, only following our instincts…If we are lucky we’ll succeed. The competition is often too high, the strength might fail us at some time but we know we have to try, we know that it is not easy but we keep the hope that after the struggle we’ll be rewarded with some peace and happiness, in a safe place where we can grow and become bigger everyday…
The road is never clear to us so we decide, either to take a chance and adventure ourselves to the unknown, without fear and hesitations, or we decide to follow the road that everyone goes, because we think it is safer and there will always be somebody next to us in case we do get lost… For those who travel alone the road gives them all the signs they need to get to their destination… They only need to have their eyes wide open and follow them!

My Photo Essay
Well, when you look at this picture, you probably think: "Ok, this is another photo of a road...Not very creative". Maybe. But it really symbolizes my idea of "On the Road", representing the journey of our lives: a long way that we all have to go through.
The road on the picture has only a way forward, because we can't go back: once you step, it's impossible to turn again - we walk only in one direction. It represents the fact that in real life we can't return to the past - the impossibility of turning back time.
If you look more precisely at the road, you can't see its the end. You can just suppose that there's a crossing or a curve beyond your sight, but you can't be totally sure about that. We live our lives, planning what we are going to do next day, week or month, but we can't be sure about what's really going to happen, because it's just impossible predict the Future.
Besides, the picture shows a bridge/way not very firm, made of unstable wooden boards; we live good and bad momments, turning our lives into an instable and unpredictable process or way. So we must be carefull, to take the right steps and avoid falling.

If you have another ideas about the picture, please share them with me! Thanks.

ANABELA
Hi everyone!

My name is Anabela, but you can call me Ana, easy and quick:)!

I'm twenty three years old and I'm from Setúbal. I live in Pontes (8km from the centre), so I take about three hours to get to school and I come by bus and then by train. I took my driver's license when I was eighteen but unfortunately I don't have a car (yet).

I live with my parents, and my brother. I left school after finishing my twelveth and began to work in a stationery for five years. After that, I went to school and made the examinations to access the university. Translation was my first choice and FCSH too. So I'm lucky to be studying here. I learnt English, French, German and now I'm learning Spanish.

I'm music addicted! African music, pop, reggaeton, rock, trance, many genres.

Patricia asked me...

P: If you could choose where you wanted to live, where would it be? And
why?
A: I guess I would like to live near the beach because I always had a passion
for the sea, it has something that has always attracted me.

P: What's the movie and book of your life?
A: I haven't read many books so it's easier to talk about cinema. I've seen
many movies but I love a lot of classics, “Save the last dance” with
Patrick S. is my favourite.

P: What's the one thing you've always wanted since you were little but never
actually got it?
A: A motorbike. A big one. A Suzuki maybe.

P: Do you play any instrument? If not, would you like to learn? Which one?
A: I don’t play one but I would like to play violin.

P: What is the one thing you can't live without?
A: My family and my friends. They are vital for my existence ;) !

P: What would you consider a difficult stage in your life? How did you get
through it?
A: It was very difficult for me when I left school, but five years later I did
get through it and finally, here I am.

PATRICIA
Hi, I'm Patricia and I'm from Montijo, just across river Tejo. Unlike you all, who have been to many places, I've spent my 18 years of existence there. It's not that bad of a city, sometimes boring, but it's calm, not at all like Lisbon.

This photo was taken during my vacation in Alentejo, in Ervedal, a small village near Avis. A very beautiful place.

I live with my parents and my 2 brothers, one older and one younger. I'm the middle girl! Besides my human family, I have my "animal" family too: My two dogs and my two cats.

During high school I think I was the only one in my class who didn't know what to do with her life. I wanted to go on studying, but I didn't know what. I spontaneously decided that I wanted to be a translator. I like making spontaneous decisions and sticking with them. Just go with the flow. Sometimes they go for the best, sometimes they don't. Most of them have been good decisions, fortunately.

Hobbies... I had piano lessons till last year, but, because of my schedule, I had to quit. I hope to return, someday. Among other things, I like watching movies, listening to music (mainly rock) and being with my friends. I'm not a big fan of discos nor am I a party girl. I just like to hang out with my friends and having fun. I too like to watch TV, mainly TV series. No soap operas!

I'm a quiet and painfully shy girl, but I'm trying to change and be a bit more talkative. So don't mind me if I just stay quiet and sit in the back of the class. =P

See you all next week!

Anabela wanted to know...

A: Why did you choose translation?
P: I've always had an interest in foreign languages and translation seemed a good way to go as any. I'm happy with my choice!

A: Are you happy for being in university?
P: I am! I was tired of my old school and a bit tired of my town as well. Coming to Lisbon and meeting many new people is proving to be a great experience. I'm still adjusting to this new life, but it's being great so far!

A: What is your greatest passion?
P: That's a tough one, for I have many. Music is probably the greatest, but anime (japanese animation) and cosplay (costume and play. Look it up!) are close seconds.

A: Do you know anyone famous? Who?
P: Not really. I used to be friends with a girl who had a little part in the show about the family of an animated character named "Neco", though.

A: What is the quality you most like in people?
P: Honesty's probably it.

A: And finally, would you like to change anything in your life? Like what?
P: I would change myself mostly, change a few of my characteristics that aren't that good. My life isn't all that bad, the people around me are great and that's more than enough for me.

RITA
Hi I'm Rita and I'm studying Translation. I'm 18 years old and I live in Odivelas, near Lisbon, with my mother and with my sister and brother, who are also studying at University.

I'm a little shy. I consider myself a very realistic person, as well as individualist and perfeccionist. I'm also a fighter. The most important things in my life are my family and friends.

I'm still adapting to this new life, because I didn't know anyone here at Nova, since my friends are all in other Universities...

About my hobbys, I love listenning to music. I like all kind of music, but my favourite bands/singers are 3 Doors Down, Incubus, Coldplay, Michelle Branch, Snow Patrol, John Mayer, Amos Lee and Ben Harper. I watch TV almost everyday, specially series and movies. When I have some free time I go to the Cinema with my friends and when I can I go to a Concert. If I could, I would go to a Concert every week! :)

In the future I would like to work in subtitling or as an interperter, in preference in a foreign country as England or USA.

To finish, I hope I like my degree and I wish good luck for all of you!!

*Rita*

This is my Interview with RAQUEL:

RaquelHi I’m Raquel and I’m interviewing Rita. Hi Rita!
Rita – Hi!

RaquelI (and certainly our colleagues) would like to know your opinion about our English class.
Rita – I like our class. The teacher and the other students are very nice and until now I've enjoyed the different works we have done.

RaquelAnd what do you think about our class Blog?
Rita – I think it allowed us to know each other better, once we could read the profiles and find out more about the other students.

RaquelDo you like the idea of making a Blog with some other students from our class?
Rita – Well, I like the idea, but I’m still guessing what we are going to do with it!

RaquelWe have already read your profile, but is there anything more you’d like to tell us about yourself?
Rita – I dont’ think so... But if anyone wants to know something else, they can ask me!

RaquelWhy did you choose to graduate in Translation?
Rita – I decided to become a translator, because I thought it would be very interesting to know and speak several languages. Besides, I really enjoy speaking English, and translation allowed me not only to continue improving my English, but also to learn another language.

RaquelOk, thank you Ritinguita! ;)
If you want to know more things about Rita, post a comment with your question or opinion!

RITA - What countries would you like to visit?
RAQUEL - Maybe England, France, Brazil...England and France to practise the English and French languages and Brazil because I think it is beautiful and I would like "to prove" its beauty!

SILVIA
So... my name is Silvia Brito, I'm 22 and I live in Cascais... I don't know if everyone knows where it is but in case you don't I recomend you to visit because it's the most wonderful place in the world... I was born in Braga, I spent half of my life in France, I've visit almost all Europe and moved house about 7 times... so to say that it is a beautiful place to live... it has to be true!!

Despite loving to travel, I like to read, go to the cinema, watch good DVD's with my friends... I'm not a party girl but sometimes I like to go to a bar with my girlfriends and have a nice time... I would like to tell you that I am this and that and bla bla bla but the truth is that I don't know myself that well and I am constantly changing... not only of house but of state of mind!!!

WHAT TÂNIA WANTED TO ASK ME...

T: If you had to fight for one thing, what would it be?
S: I guess we are always fighting for something in our lives but for me, what I would fight the most would be for my independence.

T: What is your biggest dream? And your biggest fear?
S: My biggest dream is a "cliché"... The dream of every human being: to be happy! My biggest fear is to lose the ones I love.

T: What kind of music do you like to hear?
S: I listen to almost all kind of music but my favourite is hip hop.

T: If you could travel to a country, which one would you choose?
S: I would love to go to Egypt.

T: If you could choose another color to paint the sky, which one would it be?
S: Probably pink.

T: Choose the film and the book of your life.
S: It is quite difficult to choose only one because I read a lot and watch many movies... so I'll choose 2!! "Message in a bottle" and "Memoirs of a gueisha" for the book and..."Life as a house" and "Sweet November" for the film!
